Love, Joy and … Play?

The holiday season is here, and as you traverse all of the to-do’s on your list, don’t forget to add a bit of playfulness to your season.

Yes, that’s right, play. We know it’s the season for love and joy, but did you know that play can help you decrease your stress and feel the joy of the season more?

So for today’s writing, spend a few minutes thinking about a type of play you would enjoy. No one watching, no inhibitions, just the unfettered play of a child.

Now set your timer for 5 minutes and write about what it would be like. What would you do? How would you feel?

Here we go … ready … set … write!

Perfectly Imperfect

I’ll be the first to tell you, “I’m not an artist.” In fact, it’s only been recently that I have begun to understand art.

Now, that’s not to say I haven’t enjoyed my share of plays, concerts and other art forms… but did I really understand them?

No.  At least not in the way that an artist would.

Fortunately,  I’ve been blessed with artists in my life, and they’ve helped me understand art on a deeper level.

I can look at some and at least recognize that they are trying to say more than the surface if the picture shows.

Or, I can listen to a piece of music and “get” that they are saying more than the words convey.

I’m still very much an amateur…

But isn’t that one of the beauties of art?  The purpose is to create… from wherever you are.  Then to share.

Whatever the form, all art is a perfect expression of the imperfect world we currently inhabit.

And though my offerings will never be as grand as those artists in my life, they are a perfectly imperfect expression of what I am feeling… or wanting to feel (or express) right now.

So for today, I challenge you to set your timer for 5 minutes and then write, or draw, or compose… anything that makes you happy.

Then, let me know how it went in the comments.

Happy writing… or drawing, painting, or other arting 😉

Sometimes You Just Need to be Silly

Have you ever had a day when you just need to let loose of all of the stressors and do something silly? I certainly have. Or, maybe you are feeling happy and like throwing everything serious to the wind.

Well, today’s writing prompt gives you the opportunity to throw seriousness to the wind and write a conversation between cereal and milk? What would they say? Would they be friends or enemies?

I can’t wait to hear what you come up with.

So set your timer and ready … set … write!

Tales From The Fold

You can read it in the picture, but I’ll write it again here … just in case. 😉

You are tasked with writing articles for the local pasture’s gossip rag. You heard a really good one from Ewenice (I know, it’s cheesy).

Write your juicy story. Set your time for 5 minutes and … ready … set … write!

Nothing to Say???

Person sitting with laptop, but not writing. Text says "Write about not knowing what to write."

I was sitting at my desk trying to figure out what to write about. What on earth did I have to say that anyone would want to read? Has that ever happened to you?

Then, in my head, the 1980s Chicago song started playing 25 or 6 to 4, and all of a sudden, I knew I just needed to start writing about not knowing what to write and I would figure it out eventually.

See, the thing is that as you start to write, even if you have no idea what you are going to write about, the ideas start to flow, and the words flow as well, better and better as you keep going.

That’s not to say your first draft will be perfect – or even 25% of what you’ll end up with, but it is a start, and sometimes a start is all you need to open the floodgate of words locked in your head.

So today, write about a time when you had nothing to say, or about not having anything to say now.

If you need some inspiration about writing about not knowing what to say, listen to the YouTube on Chicago’s channel here.

Okay, now set your timer and ready … set … write!

Whimsy, Fantasy, or Real Life?

The simple toad stool. You see it in garden art, fairy gardens, and sometimes real life. I was surprised to find this one, that is so close to the whimsical version, just waiting for me in the woods.

For today’s 5 minute free write, create a story that includes a toad stool.

Set your timer. Ready … set … write!

National Oreo Day?!?

Hey there!

Have you ever heard of National Oreo Day? Well apparently that is today. I love Oreos. They are one of my favorite store-bought cookies. But a national day? I guess almost anything can have its own day now.

What do you think? Do Oreos deserve a national (or worldwide) day? Although, I’ve heard it said that Oreos in Europe do not taste the same as Oreos in the US. Not sure about other countries, but if you don’t like them, they may not be the same as the little round bits of yumminess that we have here in the US.

Anyway, set your timer and write about Oreos, or National Days, or whatever your heart desires.
