What inspires you?

A sunset, a rainbow, the endless power of the ocean…

All of these fill me with awe and wonder.  They inspire me to try to express in words what I see and feel in these moments of awe.

What inspires you?  Is it nature?  Music?  Or something else entirely?

Take a few moments to consider, then set your timer for 5 minutes and ready … set … write!

Creativity

Are you a creative person? I never thought I was, but I recently have learned that people are generally born creative…

… we just hide it fitting in with everyone else’s expectations, our own self-doubt, etc., etc., etc., until we forget the creativity is even there.

So why not play a little hide and seek, find a few pockets of creativity, let them out to have a bit of fun, and watch them grow.

You’ll be glad you did.

So for today’s writing prompt, write about a time you were creative.

Ready … set … write!

And have fun!!!

What is your favorite time of day?

This picture is Sugaro National Park at dawn. It was so beautiful!

Though dawn is a hard time for me in summer, it was wonderful to wake up and take a drive through the Arizona desert so early in the morning.

The sky was barely light, and creating an ethereal glow behind the cactus.

Dawn is so different than sunset, though I love them both. The light at the beginning and end of day creates scenes that are impossible at any other time.

What about you?

What is your favorite time of day? What is it that you love about it?

Perfectly Imperfect

I’ll be the first to tell you, “I’m not an artist.” In fact, it’s only been recently that I have begun to understand art.

Now, that’s not to say I haven’t enjoyed my share of plays, concerts and other art forms… but did I really understand them?

No.  At least not in the way that an artist would.

Fortunately,  I’ve been blessed with artists in my life, and they’ve helped me understand art on a deeper level.

I can look at some and at least recognize that they are trying to say more than the surface if the picture shows.

Or, I can listen to a piece of music and “get” that they are saying more than the words convey.

I’m still very much an amateur…

But isn’t that one of the beauties of art?  The purpose is to create… from wherever you are.  Then to share.

Whatever the form, all art is a perfect expression of the imperfect world we currently inhabit.

And though my offerings will never be as grand as those artists in my life, they are a perfectly imperfect expression of what I am feeling… or wanting to feel (or express) right now.

So for today, I challenge you to set your timer for 5 minutes and then write, or draw, or compose… anything that makes you happy.

Then, let me know how it went in the comments.

Happy writing… or drawing, painting, or other arting 😉

It’s Pi(e) Day

3.14, the day of the endless number. Or … if you have a sweet tooth, the day to celebrate pie.

I don’t feel like I can write a lot about an endless number, except that it is creepy how often it comes up in the world of math and engineering. However, if we are talking about pie, there is quite a lot I could say.

Today, I think my favorite might be Raspberry cream. There is a restaurant here in our town that gets pies from a local pie lady who makes the most amazing Raspberry cream pie.

At Christmas my favorite is Pecan, closely followed by Apple.

What about you? Do you celebrate Pi day with pie? Did you even know Pi had a day? Do you like pie? What is your favorite?

Who’s Your Neighbor?

I’m on vacation in Baja California right now and am loving the desert flora and fauna. The tropical plants are so different from what we have in the Pacific Northwest, U.S. and the cohabitation of desert and tropical plants is amazing to me.

One of the plants I am enjoying is the saguaro cactus. They are everywhere here. When we drive down the road, it is as if we are driving through a forest of them. There are vines with bright pink or magenta flowers climbing the saguaro … it’s truly beautiful.

One of the saguaro near the house we are staying at is the home of an iguana. Mr. Iguana loves to sit in his doorway and watch everyone go by. It has been fun to get to know this little neighbor and the other animal neighbors near this home.

What about the neighbors near you? Are there chipmunks, or rabbits or other animal neighbors? For today’s free writing, think about your animal neighbors and include them in what you write.

Let your creativity flow and have fun! Ready … set … write!

A Place You’d Like To Be

Where would you like to be right now? A tropical paradise, a ski slope, exactly where you are?

Right now I’m exactly where I want to be, but it happens to be on vacation in Cabo, so I really can’t wax philosophical on being happy where I am.

Take a few minutes to think about where you’d like to be spending your time right now. Then take out your pen and paper (or writing media of choice), and ready … set … write!

What Inspires You?

Four pictures from nature that inspire me. A mirror lake with a swamped boat on a cold day, a wooden bridge on a woodland path, a sunset over sea stacks on the ocean, and a trillium blooming in spring.

What inspires you? A sunset? A path that disappears into the unknown? A misty, foggy day at the ocean?

I find that I am inspired by many things, but as you may be able to tell, nature in some shape or form is my biggest source of inspiration (at least in the “awe” category of inspiration).

What about you? Is nature the driving force of your inspiration? Or is it something else entirely?

Think about it for a minute, then set your timer and ready … set … write!

How do you laugh?

8 flower varieties with quote "The Earth laughs in flowers." by Ralph Waldo Emmerson

A famous quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson is “The Earth laughs in flowers.” When I see a field of daisies or sunflowers, this certainly seems to be the case.

Other flowers seem more stately and elegant rather than playful and laughing. Nevertheless, they make me smile.

But that leads me to our question for the day. How do you laugh? Is it a great big belly-laugh, or more of a gentle, rolling chuckle? Or something else entirely?

Take a few minutes to think about it and then set your timer and Ready … Set … Write!

Coastal Days

I love visiting the coast! Here in the Pacific Northwest of North America, our beaches may not be warm, but they are beautiful and teaming with wildlife. Today’s wildlife included Harbor Seals, Cormorants and Pelicans, a couple of whale sightings (gray?) and lots of Sea Gulls.

Harbor Seals chillin’ on the rocks.

The coast itself consists of rugged cliffs and rocks separated by stretches of sandy beaches. While the wind made sitting on the beach uncomfortable, overlooks at coves were protected and created great spaces for animal watching.

Now I’m watching the waves from the window of our vacation rental – a totally relaxing experience.

What about you? Where do you like to go to watch wildlife or just relax? Let me know in the comments – but first, set your timers for 5 minutes and ready … set … write!
